Medical Microdermabrasion FAQ

Is microdermabrasion painful?

Microdermabrasion is not a painful process.  It may feel a bit uncomfortable, so the surface of your skin is being gently “sandblasted”.

Is there any downtime?

There is no required downtime with this procedure as it is noninvasive and nonsurgical.  You may return to your normal activities immediately.  Exercise is recommended to resume the following day as perspiration can irritate the skin during the first several hours after the procedure.

How long does it take?

Depending on the area of skin being treated, treatment can vary from 15-45 minutes.

Who is a poor candidate for microdermabrasion?

It is not recommended for patients with a history of cold sores, rosacea or sunburn to have the treatment.  You should remain cautious as other skin problems could occur.  You consult your doctor before having any treatment.

What are the pretreatment and posttreatment recommendations?

Before having a microdermabrasion treatment you should stop all prescription skin creams several days before.  You may begin use of these creams several days after treatment.  Exfoliating and waxing should not take place until several days after treatment as well.  If any cold sores or open cuts occur, please notify your doctor.  Prior to the treatment, all women should remove all makeup.  A light wash of makeup is okay after treatment.  All men, prior to treatment, should shave several hours before, ensuring that it’s not directly before.  Everyone should avoid direct exposure to the sun for a week after treatment and sunscreen should be used.

How many treatments are necessary?

The number of treatments usually depends on each individual’s needs.  Many patients require 6 to 12 treatments.  These are done 2-3 weeks apart.  After the initial round of treatments, patients may be re-treated every 2-3 months.

Can it be combined with chemical peels?

Many patients prefer to combine this treatment with chemical peels.  It is okay to do so safely.

How is microdermabrasion different in a medical office versus a spa?

Spas typically us a spa unit to perform microdermabrasion treatments, but here FountainGrove Med Spa, you will receive your treatment with a microdermabrasion machine with is a medical device used by a certified doctor or esthetician.

Can areas other than the face be treated?

The most commonly treated areas for this treatment are the face and back, but other areas of the body can be treated as well.
